MMA Model #004 – Lightburn Zeta Ampol Round Australia Trial
The Lightburn Zeta Runabout microcar had a steel base and a fibre glass body. It was a 2 door sedan with no rear hatch. Access to the rear for storage was achieved by removing the front seats. The Zeta was powered by a Villiers Engineering 324 cc – 4 speed manual, 2 stroke petrol engine with a top speed of 96.5 Km (60 miles) per hour.
On 14 June 1964, three Lightburn Zeta Runabouts started a courageous durability race in the Ampol Around Australia Trial with another 147 cars. An endurance race of 7000 miles (11 260 km) traversing 4 States and 1 Territory over 14 days. Starting and finishing at Bondi Beach NSW. The three Zetas finished the race, but only Zeta 78A completed officially, courageously placing 101 from the 147 cars that started. The Lightburn Zeta microcar proved its endurance in the 1964 Ampol Round Australia Trial.
Ted Polgreen, a South Australian speedway driver and Ray Chapman a Development Engineer who worked on the Zeta project, was the successful crew of Zeta 78A.
